The Ordovician Period took place between 488-444 millions of years ago.

Information about the Ordovician Period

Fossils

There were many fossils being deposited at this time.  Some included cryptolithus, valcouroceras, lichenaria, and maclurites. The organisms that dominated at this time were invertebrates.  These organisms probably lived in water because we were submerged underwater during the Ordovician Period.  During this time there were Earth's first coral reefs.

New York Rock Record
The types of rock being deposited at this time was mostly bedrock. Some rocks during the Ordovicinan Period in NY include: limestones, shales, sandstones, and dolotstones.  These are found all over New York.
Location of NY at this time?
During the Ordovician Period, NY was near the equator.  It was more tropical than present time.  North America was covered in water.  Also, during this time period there was the erosion of the Taconic Mountains and the Queenston Delta formed.  The Taconian orogeny was caused by the closing of the western part of the Iapetus Ocean and collision between North America and the volcanic island arc.
This picture (above) shows where the continents were located during the Ordovicinan Period. They are very different from where they are presently. This is because plate tectonics moved them with a process called continental drift.

The first two minutes of this video (above) describe in more detail facts about the Ordovician Period.
